LJ vs. DW - the battle wages; plus, happy holidays!
Dec. 24th, 2011 | 01:10 pm
Hi y'all,
As I'm sure many of you have seen, there's been a lot going on recently in the state of LJ, and a large percentage of my flist has been making noise about migrating to Dreamwidth. This isn't the first time this has happened, as there was another such exodus a few months ago when LJ was facing the first of the recent serious DDoS attacks. From what I can see, it didn't really take, though I myself set up a DW account then as a backup.
That said, I think the recent changes to LJ's commenting system and general air of animosity, exasperation and neglect from the LJ staff towards its users will truly be the thing that decides people on whether or not to make the switch. My own journal hasn't been affected much, as far as I can tell, and personally I don't have any issues with the new commenting system, despite knowing how and why it's problematic for other users; however, I personally don't care to continue giving my money to a service that doesn't respect its customers, and obviously it makes no sense to continue using a dying service if the majority of fandom decides to saunter off in the direction of DW. The rise in popularity of Twitter and Tumblr has already greatly affected activity on LJ, as I myself have used those other platforms for the majority of my recent updates about RL and otherwise. My paid account is good until mid-next year, at which point I will likely not renew my LJ subscription. Perhaps I won't delete my account outright, but for various reasons LJ might become the backup instead.
So, for those of you who are on DW and wish to add me, my page can be found at nanoochka.dreamwidth.org, and I also invite you to add me on Twitter or Tumblr, which in both cases my username is the same. For DW, I did have a different username before, and many of you added me then; but having thought about it, I decided it made the most sense to keep things consistent, rather than risk confusion. Please friend me again under the new account if it's not too much trouble.
With that out of the way, I'd like to wish each and every one of you a great holiday season and a fantastic new year. See you all in 2012! I'll save you all a piece of birthday cake next week, too. :P

On the subject of "Ancillary Stoke"
Dec. 12th, 2011 | 05:02 pm
Greetings flisties,
A few of you have emailed me to ask about the status of my fic "Ancillary Stoke", which I f-locked a couple weeks ago. I really appreciate your taking the time to ask after the story and the great comments along with it, and I thought I owed a brief explanation as to why the fic is no longer available.
Basically, I done published it.
This is something I've wanted to do for a long time, and I've talked about it on here somewhat, but the opportunity to have a story included in an anthology by Dreamspinner Press presented itself, and after some deliberation I decided to go for it. "Ancillary Stoke" remains one of my favourite fics of what I've written, and the response from those who read it was so encouraging that I thought it would be well-received as an original story, which as an AU is practically what it is already. It fit in perfectly in a call for stories for an anthology with a destination theme, and with a publication date just after Valentine's Day it seemed necessary to give it a shot and see what happened. I'm beyond happy Dreamspinner accepted it, and I hope you are, too! I would love for anyone who enjoyed the story to take a look at its revamped incarnation when the anthology is released. I might even raffle off a couple copies of the paperback edition.
That being said, realistically I can accept that not everyone in fandom feels they should have to pay to read a story they formerly enjoyed for free. I still very much want to write fic, and love doing so, but at the same time, as a writer, I also have my professional development to think of, and have been putting a lot of effort towards developing original stories and novels for publication. However, I've decided to post a PDF version of the story that I will make available until January 1, 2012, so that those who still wish to read the original may do so and download to their hearts' content. You can find that here or through the masterlist and the original fic entry.
To anyone who is interested in reading the revised version of the story, however, I would be honoured if you gave it a chance. The anthology is titled Two Tickets to Paradise and will be available in eBook and paperback format starting February 20, 2012. My pen name is Mal Peters, in honour of my father and Captain Tightpants himself, and hopefully this is just the first of many publications to come!
Thanks for taking the time to read this, and I appreciate your understanding and support in advance. Truly none of this would be possible without the amazing feedback and encouragement I've gotten from everyone in fandom. <3

I posted this to Twitter earlier, but it later occurred to me it's probably better-suited to LJ considering my recent post about my Clarisonic Mia. There's really no better introduction than to read that post, but for those who already have and maybe needed convincing about why they should get one, I'm going to provide what I consider the ultimate form of proof:
Me, completely makeup-less. Somewhere inside my sixteen-year-old self, or even my twenty-year-old self, is dying, because a couple years ago this would have seemed like a complete impossibility. But now my skin is actually nice to the point where I can do this comfortably. Am I at the point of going out in public without makeup? Maybe not yet, but I'm close. I consider this a big start.
So here you have it, taken in front of a window so as to better illuminate any imperfections, and completely un-retouched:

I even threw in the bathrobe. It's a good feeling. So those with skin woes: go buy a Clarisonic right the hell now.

I know, I know. I've been terribly lax about journal updates lately, but I have a good reason - several good reasons, even!
Firstly, until last week I was hard at work on my chapter
spn_redemption which y'all should go check out here, along with
zatnikatel and
dotfic's lovely episodes before and after. It's nice to see so many people responding to the project in such a positive way, since it's pretty much the only thing keeping my fandom-related spirits up these days without any Cas to go around.
Otherwise, my other big project has been for, yes - wait for it -
deancasbigbang, working once again with the talented and amazing
daggomus_prime. Our posting date is next Monday, October 31, and so far I have once again managed to blow out the minimum wordcount, because apparently I don't know when to STFU. I'm excited about the story, however, as it features Dean and Cas in the setting of the modern-day Irish restaurant industry for fun, hijinks and plenty o' sex. So for the sake of tradition, I give you the progress meter:
I can't wait to share it with everyone, so keep an eye out for that in one week's time! I hope no one thinks I've forgotten about LJ...

Sometimes I like to bitch about my city to an unbelievable extent, like when it takes me 2 hours to get home on a Saturday night because of random bullshit traffic, but a lot of the time I much prefer to wax poetic about Toronto because, at the end of the day, I really do love it so damn much.
I found this fantastic video that is a must-see for any fellow Torontonians out there, along with anyone else who is curious about the city, thinking of visiting, or has visited in the past and is simply looking to reminisce.

In some ways, I regret making what amounts to not only a non-fandom-related post, but a promotional post of a thing. But I cannot contain my silence any longer! I absolutely had to write something about this little device I bought about a month ago, that has literally changed my life.

I can't contain myself. Y'all must simply head over to
teh_helenables to read the work of the amazing
helena_eternal, because... god damn. I haven't devoured so much of one author's work in one sitting like this in a long time, and I can't overstate how freaking amazing her work is. I love her controlled, subtle style and how it still manages to pack a whallop without resorting to purple language or overabundant description, and she has this knack for unearthing incredibly powerful emotions from the characters that have left me a bit winded on more than a couple occasions now.
The Violin House is her most recently posted story, and I'm not ashamed to say I cried like a little girl at the end, as well as through most of the beginning and middle. A wonderful, heart-wrenching story for these miserable days leading up to S7. I think most of you will have a hard time not going back to read everything else on her journal after that. I'm not going to lie - I'm hoping if enough of us get together and pressure her to finish some of the WIPs that are currently killing me (pot, meet kettle, I know), we'll have even more of this wonderful writing to relish in the near future.
So hop to it, chickens!

Ay-up AO3
Aug. 23rd, 2011 | 03:38 pm
Hi y'all,
I'm back from Texas after a wonderful few days with
cautionzombies and
daggomus_prime, and now that I have internet access again I'll be able to start responding to comments again and keeping in better contact.
Just FYI, I've received an invitation to AO3 and have posted Carry On Up This Broken Tide here - not surprisingly, my username there is also Nanoochka. I want to update the master post with this information, but LJ seems to be speaking exclusively little bitch these days and won't let me edit the post without fucking everything up. That'll happen as soon as it starts behaving again. I know the PDF and EPUB I made of the story is riddled with typos - I think I failed to save my edits in the .docx file at some point, so the AO3 version is mostly fixed up and will let you download various formats with the corrections made. This will be my go-to method of posting from now on (other than LJ of course), since it's much easier to update and have all the changes be reflected in the downloadable versions. Having to update the PDF and EPUB versions separately is far too much work, though I apologize to those who might have downloaded those files already and found that my edits and corrections weren't saved. This should solve the problem.

prettify's "All Your Yellow Brick Roads" EPUB (for <lj site="live
Jul. 14th, 2011 | 10:13 am
Hi all,
Because my response to
prettify's submission to
spn_j2_bigbang, All Your Yellow Brick Roads, is still something akin to a chicken running around with its head cut off (in a good way!), I thought I'd share, with her permission, the EPUB version of the story I created for use on my e-reader. Those using an iPad or iPhone to read won't struggle too much with the PDF, but other e-readers either won't allow PDF zoom or, like the Kobo, do it quite poorly, and require a lot of panning back and forth if you prefer to read text larger than a baby ant.
With the EPUB format, which I think is supported by just about every type of e-reader out there, you can make the text bigger or smaller, and navigate the document by page or by chapter, which is handy if you become lost or want to go back to a specific part. The only apology I have to make in advance is that the metadata got a little screwed up in the conversion process, so that some of the paragraphs are broken up weirdly. It won't distract you, I promise; it'll just look like
prettify really likes her some short paragraphs. :P Hopefully this will soon be available to download from the fic masterpost as well.

eBook Covers!
Jun. 11th, 2011 | 11:16 am
This is kind of a random post, but for those of you fond of eBooks and in possession of an eReader, I thought I'd direct your attention to a great Etsy shop that sells the cutest little eReader covers you ever did see.
This is the one I got:
Adorable, n'est pas? The shop is called CW Creations - I have no affiliation with them whatsoever, so I'm not getting anything out of pimping their store, but if you're in the market for a sweet, high-quality cover, it's worth checking out. I was really impressed by the craftsmanship and the colour/pattern combinations, and am far more enamoured of the unique design than I would have been by one of the uninspired designs available through eReader retailers such as Best Buy or Chapters/Borders/Barnes & Noble, etc. They're a little on the pricey side, I admit, once you factor in shipping (within the US it's far more reasonable, about $5, but to Canada I had to fork over almost $12 in shipping), but I'm so happy with my purchase that I sort of don't mind. Most covers run at around $45, which is not much more than you'd pay for a generic folder cover in store. The best thing is, the covers fit most eReaders, and you can ask them to customize the size depending on what type of device you have at home.
Happy shopping!

Good news, y'all! Looks like I might be posting a new chapter to When Play Turns Bitter this weekend, or Monday at the latest. It's only about 5500 words, which is probably about as long as it needs to be given the Epilogue that follows, but I'm just really excited that I've managed to set aside my J2BB long enough to get some work done.
Thank you all so much for your patience! I know it's been an annoyingly long time since the last update.

I was listening to "The Runaway" by UNKLE on the way home, which happens to be one of my favourite songs and something I often listen to when writing porn (what? It's true). It could just be that I've had Cas on the brain for weeks, more than usual, but for the first time it struck me how this song really does fit him to a "T".

So, as you can see, I'm trying out a new layout. I must admit I felt rather jealous of the layout I adapted for the
wipper_snappers comm, because it really is gorgeous (and you should immediately be checking out
ghost_factory if you like it), so my little project tonight was to try and come up with a way to make it Dean/Cas related without looking gaudy. Hopefully I've managed that much. The background image is actually a wallpaper I futzed together in a fit of texture-happy desperation using artwork from
aesc; I hope y'all like it. There might be some additional tweaking in the near future as I figure out exactly what I want, but I'll try not to do anything too crazy.
