LJ vs. DW - the battle wages; plus, happy holidays!
Dec. 24th, 2011 | 01:10 pm
Hi y'all,
As I'm sure many of you have seen, there's been a lot going on recently in the state of LJ, and a large percentage of my flist has been making noise about migrating to Dreamwidth. This isn't the first time this has happened, as there was another such exodus a few months ago when LJ was facing the first of the recent serious DDoS attacks. From what I can see, it didn't really take, though I myself set up a DW account then as a backup.
That said, I think the recent changes to LJ's commenting system and general air of animosity, exasperation and neglect from the LJ staff towards its users will truly be the thing that decides people on whether or not to make the switch. My own journal hasn't been affected much, as far as I can tell, and personally I don't have any issues with the new commenting system, despite knowing how and why it's problematic for other users; however, I personally don't care to continue giving my money to a service that doesn't respect its customers, and obviously it makes no sense to continue using a dying service if the majority of fandom decides to saunter off in the direction of DW. The rise in popularity of Twitter and Tumblr has already greatly affected activity on LJ, as I myself have used those other platforms for the majority of my recent updates about RL and otherwise. My paid account is good until mid-next year, at which point I will likely not renew my LJ subscription. Perhaps I won't delete my account outright, but for various reasons LJ might become the backup instead.
So, for those of you who are on DW and wish to add me, my page can be found at nanoochka.dreamwidth.org, and I also invite you to add me on Twitter or Tumblr, which in both cases my username is the same. For DW, I did have a different username before, and many of you added me then; but having thought about it, I decided it made the most sense to keep things consistent, rather than risk confusion. Please friend me again under the new account if it's not too much trouble.
With that out of the way, I'd like to wish each and every one of you a great holiday season and a fantastic new year. See you all in 2012! I'll save you all a piece of birthday cake next week, too. :P

We invite you to dc_dystopia, a Dean/Castiel and Jensen/Misha-centric fanwork challenge community inspired by the likes of j2_everafter and dc_everafter – but with a dark twist. Rather than focusing on true love, happy endings, and fluff,
dc_dystopia is all about reveling in dark!fic tropes and endings where things aren't quite so neatly resolved. If it might belong in a nightmare, then it has a place here.

Our town.

Sometimes I like to bitch about my city to an unbelievable extent, like when it takes me 2 hours to get home on a Saturday night because of random bullshit traffic, but a lot of the time I much prefer to wax poetic about Toronto because, at the end of the day, I really do love it so damn much.
I found this fantastic video that is a must-see for any fellow Torontonians out there, along with anyone else who is curious about the city, thinking of visiting, or has visited in the past and is simply looking to reminisce.

Two memes, one stolen from
blue_fjords and the other because it caught my eye with its appropriateness:
Nan's Dewey Decimal Section:
414 Phonology & phonetics
Nan = 414 = 414 = 414
Class:
400 Language
Contains:
Linguistics and language books.
What it says about you:
You value communication, even with people who are different from you. You like trying new things don't mind being exposed to unfamiliar territory. You get bored with routines that never change.
Find your Dewey Decimal Section at Spacefem.com
I'm satisfied with both!

Your dominant hues are green and blue. You're smart and you know it, and want to use your power to help people and relate to others. Even though you tend to battle with yourself, you solve other people's conflicts well. Your saturation level is very high - you are all about getting things done. The world may think you work too hard but you have a lot to show for it, and it keeps you going. You shouldn't be afraid to lead people, because if you're doing it, it'll be done right. Your outlook on life is very bright. You are sunny and optimistic about life and others find it very encouraging, but remember to tone it down if you sense irritation. |

Jul. 29th, 2011 | 03:01 pm
... by which I mean I've gone round the bend. I've never actually fucked or attempted to fuck the other kind of cracker.
Anyway. I finished the second-to-last chapter of my
spn_j2_bigbang entry last night, which brings the current wordcount into the six figures. Observe:
It would surprise me not at all if this thing caps at 120k, which is a far cry from the 60 or 70k project I anticipated at the start. By comparison, that would have been a walk through the bloody park, as opposed to writing challenge during which I could have brought a pregnancy to term. In better news, I leave for Texas in less than three weeks, which means imminent hangouts with
cautionzombies and
daggomus_prime. That might actually be too much awesomeness for one person to handle. On the other hand, I might be frothing at the mouth with insanity by then.
I wish I could post an excerpt of this thing for y'all, just so there's some context for what the hell I've been nattering on about for months, but sadly that would be against the rules. But there's less than a month left to wait!

eBook Covers!
Jun. 11th, 2011 | 11:16 am
This is kind of a random post, but for those of you fond of eBooks and in possession of an eReader, I thought I'd direct your attention to a great Etsy shop that sells the cutest little eReader covers you ever did see.
This is the one I got:
Adorable, n'est pas? The shop is called CW Creations - I have no affiliation with them whatsoever, so I'm not getting anything out of pimping their store, but if you're in the market for a sweet, high-quality cover, it's worth checking out. I was really impressed by the craftsmanship and the colour/pattern combinations, and am far more enamoured of the unique design than I would have been by one of the uninspired designs available through eReader retailers such as Best Buy or Chapters/Borders/Barnes & Noble, etc. They're a little on the pricey side, I admit, once you factor in shipping (within the US it's far more reasonable, about $5, but to Canada I had to fork over almost $12 in shipping), but I'm so happy with my purchase that I sort of don't mind. Most covers run at around $45, which is not much more than you'd pay for a generic folder cover in store. The best thing is, the covers fit most eReaders, and you can ask them to customize the size depending on what type of device you have at home.
Happy shopping!

In the spirit of helping those in need, I have made an offer for two buy-it-now fics in honour of the seriously lovely, talented and fabulous
![[info]](https://l-stat.livejournal.com/img/userinfo.gif?v=3)
My thread can be found here - my current offer is for two fics, either Dean/Castiel or Jensen/Misha, starting at $5 (USD)/1000 words. The fic can be as long or as short as you like (well, barring the minimum); each additional 1000 words is $5, so when you place your bid be sure to let me know your maximum amount. Unlike traditional auctions, the winning bids will belong two the first two people to post.
Check it out and support a good cause and a beloved fandom talent. Chop-chop!

So, as you can see, I'm trying out a new layout. I must admit I felt rather jealous of the layout I adapted for the
wipper_snappers comm, because it really is gorgeous (and you should immediately be checking out
ghost_factory if you like it), so my little project tonight was to try and come up with a way to make it Dean/Cas related without looking gaudy. Hopefully I've managed that much. The background image is actually a wallpaper I futzed together in a fit of texture-happy desperation using artwork from
aesc; I hope y'all like it. There might be some additional tweaking in the near future as I figure out exactly what I want, but I'll try not to do anything too crazy.

Felt like sharing my new ink... Sorry the picture quality isn't the greatest!
First - my Baskerville ampersand, an homage to my graphic design days and my obsessive love of fonts. Very happy with how the shading turned out, even if the picture is horrible and my wrist is all bloody and caked with ink. I'll update a prettier one later. :P

Second - does this really need explaining?
