Shut up, Sera.

Can we make a list of all the things that are already annoying me about 6.21, based on the preview video? Here, let's have a spoiler cut and jump right to it.

Where to begin?
  • The return of uneducated!Dean. The man kills monsters for a living, and we're expected to buy that he's never heard of H. P. Lovecraft? It's so funny when we're reminded about how thick Dean is, because he's obviously never read a book in his life. o.O (Also, I'm sure the fact that Metallica has a song called "Call of Cthulhu" wouldn't have crossed his radar.)
  • Thanks also for the reminder, show, that it's not feasible to be intelligent and also get laid.
  • More hetero posturing from Dean.
  • I know Ben is scared for his life and all, but what happened to the badass, clever kid from Season 3? He would have MADE a shotgun out of a clothes-hanger and some spitballs or something. Love the fact that he ran upstairs without checking to see how his mum is doing or bothering to notice any helpful details - obviously not Dean's kid.
  • Oh, look! A black man! Let's kill him.
  • I'm pretty sure Lisa and Ben being killed aren't Dean's WORST nightmare, Sera. (Oh hai, Sam.) But thanks for coming out.
If you have any other thoughts or concerns, feel free to add them to the list. Sorry for the venting, but obviously my fear of next week's finale has moved into the anger stages.

I am probably wrong, but I was SURE there's been a Lovecraft reference used by Dean or Sam in the past. *searches memory* maybe it was a Wyndham reference. It's driving me crazy!

The preview annoyed me too. The hetero postering gets tired - I haven't cringed that hard at Dean since 'Live Free and Twihard'.

...and personally I think Cas just wanted to borrow a book for some light reading *rolls eyes* damn you Bobby for jumping to conclusions!

You know, it wouldn't surprise me if there was a reference somewhere else in the show, because COME ON. Lovecraft is kind of impossible to escape in the genre, and Dean's life is a fucking horror movie. I'm still not unconvinced that we'll actually MEET Cthulhu in the finale, in which case Dean better start brushin' up on his reading now.

Dean probably GAVE Cas the book during their little midnight rendezvous. Like Cas said Moisha was his cousin or something, and Dean was like, "Here, have it. I'm sure there's nothing I'd understand in here, anyway."

I SAID ALL OF THESE EXACT THINGS LAST NIGHT WHEN I SAW THIS. I believe my exact words were, "Oh, right, because Dean's read Vonnegut but doesn't know Lovecraft, and they need to replace that kid with someone who can act, and Sera needs to STFU."

I mean, the way she says "Uh, his worst nightmare?", like it should be obvious and anyone who doesn't think so obviously has brain damage, just grated on me. I HOPE LISA *IS* KILLED. Bitch is annoying and bringing her back was stupid. It's like suddenly pairing Lupin with Tonks: MAKES NO SENSE WHATSOEVER.

Argh. Sera needs to go away. Forever.

Ironically, that kid is the same actor who played Ben in S3 - I'm not saying he's great or anything, because his O_O face when someone burst through the door made me giggle (or maybe it was the fact he was bent over), but I think he's just being written in an entirely different (ie. bad and annoying) way this season. Maybe Ben is secretly gay, and all Dean's hetero posturing has stunted his emotional growth or something.

Sera has to keep reminding us of How Important Lisa and Ben are to the show, because they're her creations and my guess is the arbitrary decision to pair them off with Dean in S5 was hers. The jig is up, lady. It was a bad s/l, so stop fucking trying to convince us it did anything but make the viewers give a collective WTF.

We need to start a petition to get Edlund running this bitch.

Yes, shut up Sera... and come back, Eric, please!!

What the fuck was that turning Ben Edlund's wonderful (though angsty) visit by Cas to Dean last week into a a 'Cas on a secret book-hunting mission, sorry if you thought it was all about you' revisionist history crap, Sera?

And I'll just add a "sing it" to that last point - yeah, he might have a place in his heart for Lisa and Ben yadda, but his WORST nightmare? Over Sam dying, Sam going to hell for all eternity to stop the apocalypse? Over himself - like when he was all vamped up - being the one to hurt them?

I could probably understand that it would fall into "worst nightmare" category if throughout the season - and not just when it suited the plot - there had been some angsting on Dean's part re: missing Lisa and Ben, or worrying about them or something... but once that line was over it seemed it didn't matter. Bringing them into the last two eps just seems... too convenient.

The Lovecraft thing pisses me off so much. First off, DEAN READS! Secondly, yes, Metallica fan and third, he's a hunter. Do they really want us to believe a hunter wouldn't know Lovecraft?

As captain of Team Smart!Dean, this offends me in ways I don't even...I do know this though, I'm ignoring this bit of "canon" as it is bullshit.

And you know the part that makes the hetero posturing worse? Is last weeks episode was all about his love for Castiel, and now we're supposed to regress from that sort of honest devotion to hurr I like sex with women. Which is great, yay, but it shouldn't be at the expense of his characterization.

I'm not even going to touch on the Ben thing.

Oh and yes, worst nightmare. She really needs to look up the definition of worst nightmare, doesn't she?

I am WTFing at Sera resorting to dumb!Dean in her script. So annoyed. How is Dean a hunter and not familiar with Lovecraft? Yeah...using Dean's "dumbness" for comic relief irks me as much as them using Castiel for comic relief.

But I'm not mad at the worst nightmare comment like I see lots of folks getting angry about right now -- Dean's worst nightmare is seeing ANYONE he cares about being hurt, especially if he sees it as his fault. I really don't like this idea that fandom has that Dean only cares about Sam/only cares about Sam getting hurt/killed. That's just not true. Dean's worst nightmare is anyone he cares for being in jeopardy. That's how I read it. ;)

Good Lord that child needs some acting skills. Reminds me of the kid from Two and a Half Men. *shudder*

There are some major things I object to in this series, but definitely the most fundamental is how little regard the writing shows for these characters which have been so carefully, so well built over the course of the previous series.

It's not just one or two mistakes, or curious decisions - it seems a blanket rule that everytime we are asked to read humour, surprise twist, and brave writing - it is all actually painful examples of bad writing.

Its scary that this stuff hasn't hit the cutting room floor because SOMEBODY has jumped in and said, guys - have you ever actually watched this show?

I wouldn't be at all surprised if at the end of season 6, Dean wakes up suddenly and realises it was aaall a dreeeam....

The dumb!Dean thing is ridiculous. There's no way he doesn't know H.P Lovecraft -- he's lived his life immersed in hunting and folklore. S3 Dean didn't know Grimm's fairy tales? Seriously show?

The "worst nightmare comment" struck me as a figure of speech. Plus Dean's worst nightmare is anyone he cares about being hurt (and especially it being his fault). I don't see how it's the show being confused about Sam's importance -- losing Cas is Dean's worst nightmare, John dying is Dean's worst nightmare, Jo and Ellen going up in fiery blast is his worst nightmare, being unable to save people is his worst nightmare, anything bad happening to Sam is his worst nightmare most of all.

I think Sera is transposing herself with Dumb!Dean. I mean, c'mon -- she doesn't strike me as the sort of person to sit down and read Lovecraft. And it seems a little odd to me that since she's been showrunner, every character is out-of-character. ??? WTF?

Lisa and Ben should have met fiery deaths waaaay before this. It's a cheap plot device to whip them out now, because obviously, they will be saved by someone, and obviously, Show doesn't have the cojones to kill them off in a fiery death. It's predictable because we know from the get-go there's only two outcomes available. A better option would have been turning Lisa and Ben into monsters that come back to hunt down Dean. Something, anything other than the dreaded "I Have Your Wife" trope: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/IHaveYourWife

OMG I was going to rant about this in my journal but i'm just gonna do it here instead because you've said everything I wanted to say.

Fuck but uneducated Dean makes me hate this show more than anything else ever. It's bullshit. If he were dumb, he'd be dead. This is Dean who religiously knew everything written in his dad's bible, who spends his life reading lore, who knows Vonnegut for crying out loud. I was SO TURNED ON by the Dean in Frontierland getting all ready and booky and yes, star trek nerdy! You're telling me he's such a macho man he doesn't read because he's out having sex "with women", and yet expect me to believe he knows the plot to Star Trek IV?

The "women" thing, FUCK. It's one step forward and FIVE MILLION BACK with his characterisation. I was so flippin' impressed last week with his growth, his ability to shut up and take a step back, to express his utter love of Cas and his family. And now they're giving us this? This season 1 I'll do anything with a skirt Dean? no.

Ben. Oh Ben. Remember when we met him? How hilariously cute and smart he was? I miss that kid.

I thought the EXACT same thing about the black man.... he was black and good and then he was DEAD.

The worst nightmare thing I can work around, because I can see it as anyone being hurt and Dean not saving them when he could. But I agree, in Sera's mind? This is not what she meant.

*sigh* i'm trying to pull back from show. Because this kind of mentality? Is the kind that means Cas will be killed off. I don't want to be in the situation I was in with Torchwood where I can't watch any SPN ever again, when these characters will be ruined for me. Because it would be so indicative of where this show keeps going, it keeps growing, pulling in these amazing characters and characterisations, and then stomping all over that growth with bad writing.

Agree, agree, agree.
Lisa makes no sense, Ben is incredibly annoying these days, and after the emotional journey Dean has gone through over the years he is a lot more than a dumb, skirt chasing man without layers.

Also, completely agree with the comment about revisionist history. Thanks Sera, for destroying what was a touching and heart breaking moment between Dean and Cas, by saying Cas really just came to steal a book. Fuck you!
