TITLE: In the Weeds
AUTHOR: [ profile] nanoochka
PAIRING(S): Dean/Cas, references to Sam/Ruby
WARNINGS: Food porn, misuse of Irish accents
DISCLAIMER: Supernatural and all associated content is the property of Eric Kripke and The CW. No infringement intended.

SUMMARY: “Dean knew, from the minute he laid eyes on Chef Castiel MacCarthy, the day would come that he would have to kidnap the man and dump the body in the darkest, dirtiest crack den in Ireland. Given that this was Dublin city, it wouldn’t be hard to find.”

AUTHOR'S NOTES: There’s a certain sense of pride that comes with being able to say you finished writing a DCBB challenge with food poisoning, and maybe some pithy line about how it came in with a bang and out with sounds of misery from the bathroom floor.

Fortunately, the many days, weeks and indeed months leading up to the completion of this story were much more pleasant, and I’m as happy to say that I finished it as I am to thank the wonderful people who helped me (read: threatened at gunpoint) get there. They are, in some semblance of chronology, The Beatles and Zep for providing me with some semblance of sanity during marathon writing sessions; [ profile] fossarian, who not only encouraged me to develop the idea so many months ago but graciously rolled with the unexpected developments along the way; [ profile] glorormeien for letting me argue with her about food; [ profile] qthelights and [ profile] obstinatrix for the invaluable cheerleading, feedback and reassurance; [ profile] cautionzombies and [ profile] mclachlan for the truly outstanding betas and eleventh-hour workshopping; and finally [ profile] daggomus_prime, who I didn’t expect to be partners in crime with again so soon, but was surely a twist of fate, for being endlessly enthusiastic, inspiring and delightful, and for having far more integrity than I thought was possible for one so small. ;)

Last but not least, a huge round of applause to [ profile] hils and [ profile] oddlyfamiliar for their many hours of hard work and dedication to pulling this challenge off without a hitch for yet another year, as well as being far more gracious, understanding and flexible than I probably deserved. Thanks for making it so that this story could still see the light of day.

To everyone else, I hope you enjoy the story you’re about to read!

TITLE: “Carry On Up This Broken Tide”
AUTHOR: [info]nanoochka
ARTIST: [info]daggomus_prime
PAIRINGS: Dean/Castiel, mentions of Dean/Lisa and Sam/Jess
WARNINGS: AU, depictions of psychological illness (ie. nervous breakdowns, anxiety), dubcon, mild D/s themes, infidelity, mentions of drug use and past drug abuse.
SUMMARY: The small, California town of Cardiff-by-the-Sea attracts millions of surfers a year, ranging from amateurs to world-class professionals. Although tourists constantly populate the area, Sam Campbell—née Winchester—renowned author of supernatural suspense novels and surf enthusiast, has called Cardiff home ever since the violent death of his girlfriend, Jessica. When he meets Castiel Novak, an enigmatic newcomer with a mysterious past, the two strike up an easy friendship that revolves around surfing and their mutual need for privacy from the outside world. The arrival of Sam’s brother, Dean, following a messy divorce under hazy circumstances, promises to complete their little circle of misfits and social pariahs. Sam thinks that life for once can’t get any better, surrounded by the people he trusts most in the world. Much to his dismay, it quickly becomes obvious that there is no love lost between Dean and Cas, though Sam can’t begin to guess why. As time progresses, he begins to get the feeling that the two of them know each other from somewhere else, and that their past might have everything to do with why they chose to escape to Cardiff in the first place. AUTHOR’S NOTES: I literally have a team of people I have to thank for making the completion of this novel—and I use that term deliberately—possible. What started off as a light-hearted fic idea I shared with [info]fossarian in January of this year grew into something bigger than I could have imagined, and for various reasons I think it’s safe to say it has extended past the definition of a mere story. I would have never crossed the finish line without [info]fossarian ’s encouragement and support, so this is happily dedicated to her. I must also give my sincere thanks to [info]nyoka and [info]qthelights for their amazing work as betas, along with [info]gloromeien for, in addition to almost eleven years of friendship, the many late-night phone calls and bouts of insecurity for a fandom in which she doesn’t participate. Mad props also to [info]cautionzombies and [info]mclachlan for being the bestest alphas a girl could ask for. Last but not least—[info]daggomus_prime . I couldn’t have asked for a better artist to partner with on this story, and your enthusiasm and passion for the work made reaching the end possible. I can’t even begin to express my love for the artwork itself, and don’t think I need to; it’s pretty damn clear how phenomenal it is, and I’m proud to have it associated with this project. Finally, thanks so much to the mods for all their hard work, since I know it's not appreciated nearly enough.
